Why use a garden designer?

It's a great idea to talk through your ideas with a garden designer

As with all things in life, it’s a good idea to have a plan to work to and an idea of where you are going, and your garden is no exception.

Being effectively another room of your house, a properly designed garden can greatly increase the value of your home, so it’s important to get professional help if you don’t feel comfortable tackling the project yourself.

5 Reasons for using a designer

1)      Experience

By asking a designer to help you with your garden, you are tapping into their experience of creating many beautiful gardens.  This may be the first time you have undertaken a garden project, whereas they have often worked on hundreds of gardens.  They have been trained to take into consideration the finer points of proportion, perspective, aspect and soil type; and have good knowledge of what will practically will work in your garden, as well as new trends and products available.  They can also give you an idea of what to expect during the build of your garden and advise on realistic timings for your project.

2)      Fresh ideas

You may well have ideas for your garden, but there may be things that you may not have considered.  By bringing in a fresh pair of eyes, solutions to problems may present themselves. It’s also much easier for an outsider to present an unbiased and practical view on how best to deal with your particular garden issues.  Also, they can help you come to a compromise that all the family are happy with.

3)      Clear vision

Having your ideas formulated onto paper will help you and the landscapers building your garden to have a clear picture of what you are trying to achieve.  This will ensure that the landscaper will give you an accurate quotation for the work to be done, with no nasty surprises.  This is especially important if you are comparing quotes from more than one landscaper.  It will also highlight any potential problems, so that they can be considered and rectified, before the first hole is dug!

You can also make sure that any money you spend on plants is spent wisely, as the designer will advise you on the best plants for your garden, considering the soil, aspect and maintenance required for  your chosen plants, as well as their speed of growth.

4)      Reassurance

The last thing you want is for your garden to cleared, and then the workmen disappear, leaving you with an unusable garden.  Your designer will be able to recommend reputable landscapers to build your garden, who are reliable, personable and build to a high standard.  The designers can also make visits to your garden during the build if you are not available, to make sure that all is going well, to give you added peace of mind.

 5)      Your dreams will become reality!

Often by having someone who can keep your project moving forward is invaluable.  If you are busy with work and other commitments, it can be hard to find the time to keep on top of your garden project, especially if you only have time at weekends.  A designer will progress the work forward and make sure that all is well, answering queries on your behalf, so that your garden just takes weeks to build, instead of the whole summer!

If you are not sure, why not have a consultancy session with a garden designer, to see how they can help you.  Many designers will offer this session for a minimal fee, so you have the opportunity to discuss your garden and the design process with them in more detail.
